TRA – Migration Skills Assessment

If the 485 Temporary Graduate visa has less than one year remaining, and a skills assessment is required, what should be done? If you are unable to apply for the 485 Temporary Graduate visa after mid- this year and are over 35, and a skills assessment is required, what should be done? 

Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) is a skills assessment service for people with trade skills gained overseas or in Australia for the purpose of migration.  

The main occupations eligible for skills assessment by TRA are as follows. 

  • Chef 
  • Cabinetmaker 
  • Carpenter
  • Motor Mechanic
  • Painter
  • Tiler 
  • Welder 

They offer the following skills assessment programs.

  • TSS Skills Assessment Program
  • Offshore Skills Assessment Program

The program I will provide information about today is the Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) program. 

Migration Skills Assessment (MSA)

The Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) is for applicants who need a skills assessment as part of their skilled migration visa application to the Department of Home Affairs. 

The MSA outcome recognises if you have the skills and experience needed at the required level to work in Australia in your nominated occupation. 

Eligibility 

  • listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Short-term Skilled Occupations List (STSOL) and TRA is the relevant skills assessing authority
  • directly relevant to your qualification and/or apprenticeship
  • directly relevant to your employment

*The following occupations are not eligible for the MSA program. 

Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic, Electrician (General), Electrician (Special Class) and Plumber (General)

Qualifications 

TRA will determine whether your qualification is comparable to the relevant AQF qualification and level for your nominated occupation. The relevant AQF qualification for occupations assessed by TRA can be found on the Australian Qualifications by Occupation document on the TRA website. 

Employment 

You are required to demonstrate 3 years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid employment. This employment must be directly relevant to your nominated occupation and can be completed before, during or after your comparable qualification. 

TRA considers full-time employment as ongoing employment working the required number of hours considered full-time in the country where the employment was undertaken. Fair Work Australia considers full-time employment in Australia as 38 hours per week unless a particular industrial award specifies otherwise.

Employment completed on a part-time basis will be considered on a pro-rata basis. For example, if you have completed 20 hours of employment per week over a 2-year period, you will be considered to have completed 12 months of full-time paid employment.
